This famous document will be on show from 3 June to 2 July 2023. The Declaration of Arbroath has not been on public display for 18 years, when it was last displayed at the Scottish Parliament. The iconic and fragile 703-year-old document can only be displayed occasionally in order to ensure its long-term preservation.

The Declaration is a letter dated 6 April 1320 written by the barons and freeholders of the Kingdom of Scotland to Pope John XXII. The letter asked the pope to recognize Scotland's independence and acknowledge Robert the Bruce as the country's lawful king.

Importantly, it recounts that the Scots came to the British Isles from the eastern Mediterranean. Manuscripts in both Ireland and Scotland clearly refer to the Lia Fail, or ‘Stone of Destiny’, as an ancient heirloom or proof of identity. A BIWF booklet, which includes this history, will be available from the latter half of June.
